10 Tips and Tools to Hone our Work From Home Life

With the closing of so many offices, and even some entire states, a lot of us are left trying to find a new normal in our every day lives. We’ve outlined our top 10 favorite tips from LeaderMom team member, Nasheela O’Dowd.

  1. Engage the family at home and delegate what you can – e.g., have your child make a list of everything that he/she needs to get done the next day. Include school requirements, meals, playtime, physical activity.

  2. Give your child a blank daily schedule broken into 30 min blocks. Let him/her plan their schedule. Color coding makes it more fun.

  3. Create and protect blocks of time to create positive moments with your family – e.g., align your schedule and your child's schedule for shared meals and some play time or physical activity time together.

  4. Set-up a reward system for being proactive, productive and following the schedule. One LeaderMom who was a strategy and innovation specialist gave her kids “innovation and initiative points” for doing things like helping out a sibling – picking up the younger sibling’s Legos, reading a book, putting messes away – and those were converted in power to control what the family watched on movie night. Classic leadership: reward the behaviors we want!

  5. Set shared goals with your child. (My daughter and I are trying the Splits App challenge.)

  6. Consider creative ways for learning and stimulation – fun math apps, adobe drawing apps, iMovie, etc.

  7. Let your child pick out a fun recipe to make (jello no-bake cheesecake, jello fruit and marshmallow cups, fruit and yogurt popsicles, etc.)

  8. Carve out time for yourself – a relaxing bath, a walk, reading, Rosetta language online, meditation, call a friend, etc.

  9. Remind your kids how much they matter to others – e.g., have them Facetime or call grandparents, or make pictures for a loved ones (especially elderly ones or isolated ones a few times a week) – doesn't have to be long but a few minute Facetime call can go a long way.

  10. Get more sleep. Really.
